Canada’s Indian Residential School (IRS) system will forever remain one of the country’s most shameful legacies. These government-funded institutions took Indigenous children against their will and subjected them to abuse, neglect, and dangerous living conditions in the name of assimilation into white European culture and religion.
As Indigenous Rights movement began to grow, Indigenous communities demanded justice from Canada via protests, lawsuits, and intense lobbying. One of those activist-led lawsuits resulted in the largest class-action settlement in Canadian history—mandating apologies from the Canadian government, official church bodies, and other participants in the horrors. It recommended policy changes and allocated approximately $2 billion to distribute among Survivors of the IRS system.
Join WrapCap for the 2nd annual Crossroads of Care Conference, a 2-day virtual event on December 5th and 6th, bringing together professionals, youth, and organizations dedicated to enhancing the settlement experience of newcomer youth in the PNT region, Canada.
This conference fosters collaboration and the exchange of ideas across key sectors that shape youth settlement, focusing on SWIS, housing, employment, mental health, recreation, education, justice, and more. Let’s work together to build capacity for organizations and improve youth services.
Open up your browser or turn on the TV and it's everywhere these days. 20% of Calgarians are currently in need of affordable housing. Rent has increased by more than 35% since 2020. An annual salary of $156,000 is needed to purchase a home in Calgary. Calgary is in the midst of a housing crisis and action on affordable housing is needed now. On September 14th the City of Calgary's housing strategy recommendations will be presented to the council. We strongly recommend that the city council accept all 6 recommendations from the Housing and Affordability Task Force.
CFN Chief Program Officer Dr. Kelly Ernst offers an in-depth analysis of YYC's housing crisis below.
